Olly the Octopus
Children’s book written and illustrated by me.
Olly the Octopus
Olly the Octopus is a children’s book I created for my third year project at Central St Martins. The story is about a little octopus who goes on an adventure to find a new reef after his old one was being destroyed due to climate change. Olly meets other characters along the way who are also losing their homes and together they travel to a new reef to have a safe and happy life.
What inspired me?
The project started out with research about cuttlefish due to a previous experiment with jewellery. While looking at their incredible ability to camouflage, my attention switched to octopuses. I learnt about how their habitats were being destroyed and what was causing the coral to bleach and break.
Along the way I also came across a few organisations that spent their time helping the damaged coral reefs to come back to life. They found ways of taking clippings from ‘donor corals’ and helping them grow so that they would eventually have enough to replant back into the bleached coral areas.
